Exciting times and a new family member!

I've been back for over a week already, and it feels like our holidays happened months ago. 
I felt refreshed and a sense of a new beginning when I stood on our porch the day after we returned.
I was going to write a blog about this feeling and how I didn't even realize how much I needed a reset until I was back from our trip.

But now I can barely remember the feeling anymore I just know I was standing there and enjoying the moment. 
Life is sooooo busy again, and that's because we chose it.

Saturday was a big day for our family, as we welcomed a new family member into our house and our lives, at least for a while. This has been a long process, and we all have been excitedly prepping and renovating for quite some time.
Antonia is a German exchange student who will be staying with us for the next 3 months.

We are still in the settling-in phase, and over the next two weeks we will hopefully find a bit of a new routine. In the meantime, I want to let you all know that Leon and I will not be able to attend this week's Kao Shi class, as we are taking Antonia on a short camping trip to the mountains before it gets too cold.
In any case, I just wanted to finally check in again. I was proud of myself for pre-writing two blogs before our trip to make sure I didn't miss any, only to come back home and then fall off the wagon. 
I'm just going to do my best to jump back on and I know I'll get there.

Confidence vs. Ego

Yesterday’s breakathon felt like a milestone for me. For the first time, I broke ten wooden boards. I was definitely worried, as I knew this meant no wiggle room in terms of difficulty level.  But I did it and it showed me in the most tangible way how much I have grown. Compared to previous years, the difference was significant, and it felt really good to finally see progress that sometimes seems invisible to me.  Before heading to class last night, I wanted to feel a bit more prepared. Processing…….!

Last night’s I Ho Chuan meeting was a bit of a shocker. We have have had several changes and adjustments announced in the past, but this one felt very different and even though „nothing“ changes , it genuinely surprised me. I’m using this blog to figure out how it actually affects me and how I feel about it. So please take it with a grain of salt, it’s still fresh and a little raw. I understand where our master instructors are coming from. I don’t know all the background details, but even in my few years on the team I’ve seen what they’re talking about. The levels of engagement vary a lot, and I can’t pretend I’m above that. When I first joined three years ago, it felt like a mountain to climb. The requirements terrified me, and I’ve never met them all, not even close. But every year has been a little better than the one before. Not so shiny anymore!

 Last week Wednesday I earned my brown belt. That day had been anticipated for a while as I had almost a month to prepare and practice for it. I am of course super happy and proud also because Leon and I got to experience this together but I have to say I did not expect this shift in my attitude. It felt very different getting to the brown belt than to any other belt level I earned in the past and interestingly this didn't really strike me until a couple of weeks ago. All of a sudden I remembered my beginnings and how I looked up and admired many of our teammates who were then where I am now. The thing is when I think back, the brown belt level and the skills that go along with that seemed so close to those of a black belt after all it is just a shade away. When I look at myself now and specifically when I watch videos of my forms and think of me attempting breaking boards or even sparring, I can't help but feel somewhat underserved of this rank.
